Heritage Toronto Community Award

HerstoriesCafe is most grateful for receiving a Heritage Toronto Community Award for our outreach work in the City of Toronto. We received this award at the Heritage Toronto Awards ceremony at Koerner Hall October 9th, 2012.

Here is what the Jury said:
HerstoriesCafé was founded to bring together people interested in local women's history through free café talks generally held at a location related to the evening's topic. Topics explored include the history of women teachers' unions and the experience of black women in nineteenth-century Toronto. City-wide in its reach, HerstoriesCafé seeks to create connections between all those who "do" history: historians, archivists, museum practitioners, teachers, students and history enthusiasts.

The jury recognized Herstories Café for its contemporary and innovative approach to local history programming. The jury also noted that the group has brought to light a wide diversity of perspectives on local history, as well as otherwise untold stories in their own contexts.

Thank you to all our followers. See you at the next HerstoriesCafe event!

Herstories Cafe Mission Statement

Our goal is to start conversations between history enthusiasts, historians, archivists, museum practitioners, history teachers and students. We hope to provide a much-needed forum for those who work on and are interested in women’s history and want to feel connected to a larger community of like-minded people. Think of it as a salon: a place to share ideas, pool historical resources, and stimulate debate in an intimate and relaxed setting.

Our speakers will cover a wide range of topics but are united in their interest in women’s stories. Cafe talks will be located throughout the city of Toronto, in places which are historically relevant to the evening topic, and will often include an on-site historical walking tour. Herstories Cafe is also committed to supporting all things local: speakers will emphasize local women’s histories in particular, and talks will be held at small local cafes and support local business venues whenever possible.
